Sea Gulls Are Large Birds That Can Turn Into Large Bird Problems
Gull problems can be permanently fixed with the right bird deterrent approach
Sea Gull Bird Control Service Area
Because Gulls are larger than most pest birds, they present more sizable bird problems across the board. They produce more waste than smaller species, and their droppings contain a higher concentration of uric acid which eats away at building substrates. They also bring more scavenged food up to the rooftops on which they reside. They then use sharp beaks to peck through their findings, poking holes in rubber membrane roofs which can lead to leaks and the need for expensive roof repairs or even replacements.
Though typically native to coastal environments, there has been an increase in Gull migration inland as they search for food during cooler months. Sea Gulls are frequently found perched atop buildings such as waste facilities, stadiums, and entertainment venues where there are plenty of discarded food pickings in parking lots. Gulls are extremely territorial and do not scare easily, creating serious bird problems on many levels.
A resident population of Gulls may inhibit maintenance workers from performing their rooftop responsibilities. As important maintenance work is neglected, this can quickly lead to mechanical equipment breakdowns. To combat these territorial birds, it is common for bird control technicians installing bird deterrent systems to wear protective gear such as hard hats.
Gull bird control requires a combination of remediation methods
Bird control for Gulls is typically achieved through a combination of methods. Depending on the roof conditions or open space where control is necessary, our Gull Grid System is installed in conjunction with our BellStrip™ electric track bird deterrent system. The stainless steel cable grid acts as a deterrent for these soaring birds, keeping them from approaching the enclosed area.
Our bird control experts engineer these grids for longevity, using 316 Marine Grade Stainless steel cable and hardware. And we build them onto galvanized poles to allow for continued accessibility and ease of future bird control maintenance. The electric track system prevents the Gulls from roosting on peaks, parapets, roof lines, and facade ledges.
Given the size and weight of these large birds, an electric track system must contain a significantly higher voltage than one used to deter small birds such as Sparrows or Pigeons. BellStrip bird deterrent systems are made with a blend of highly conductive copper and strong stainless steel wiring capable of delivering the highest charge available. In those instances where the intent is to physically exclude Gulls from a location, 4” mesh ExcludeNet™ could be used.
