MSNBC - RFK Jr. Has named himself the official arbiter of science - HHS has been following Kennedy's lead on vaccines, from limiting who can get Covid boosters to withdrawing funding for a potential H5N1 bird flu vaccine. Just two weeks ago, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told Congress that his “opinions about vaccines are irrelevant” and that nobody should “take advice” from him about getting them. How quickly things change. In one decision after another, the Trump administration’s recent actions have shown that Kennedy, with his poor understanding of basic medicine, has deemed himself the final arbiter of vaccine science in the U.S.

New York Times - Canada Wants to Kill 400 Ostriches. Kennedy and Dr. Oz Want to Save Them. - Ostriches on a British Columbia farm have died of the avian flu. Canada ordered hundreds of others to be culled. But two top Trump administration officials have objected. Canada ordered the birds to be culled after the avian virus spread through Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, British Columbia, a town in the province’s interior, north of Washington State. The plight of the wobble — a term sometimes used to describe a group of ostriches — has divided Canadians, but the birds have won allies across the border, namely top officials in the Trump administration. But most veterinarians agree that keeping birds alive that may still have active infections and could spread the virus to others is a threat to public health.

Reuters - Animal health body says vaccines needed to protect humans and trade - Vaccinating animals more widely could help stop the spread of deadly diseases, protect public health and keep global trade flowing, the head of the World Organisation for Animal Health said as bird flu disrupts Brazilian poultry exports. Brazil, the world's top poultry exporter, confirmed its first-ever outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, in domestic birds last week, prompting export bans from several countries.
World Organization for Animal Health - First report on world’s animal health reveals changing spread of disease impacting food security, trade and ecosystems - Animal diseases are migrating into previously unaffected areas, half (47%) of which have zoonotic – or animal-to-human – potential. Outbreaks of bird flu in mammals more than doubled last year compared to 2023, increasing the risk of further spread and human transmission. Access to livestock vaccines remains uneven around the world, with disease eradication efforts facing funding and political challenges. Antibiotic use in animals fell by 5% between 2020 and 2022 and expanding livestock vaccination globally would reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.
Channel News Asia - Bird flu outbreaks in mammals double, raising human risk: Report - The number of mammal outbreaks soared to 1,022 across 55 countries last year, compared to 459 in 2023, according to the Paris-based agency, which monitors animal diseases worldwide. "It is concerning because it is a change in the pattern of the epidemiology of the virus," WOAH's director general Emmanuelle Soubeyran told AFP. Health experts have been sounding the alarm about the potential pandemic threat posed by bird flu, which has shown signs of mutating as it spreads in particular among dairy cows in the United States.

Reuters - Brazil can no longer export poultry and meat to EU due to bird flu
CBS HealthWatch - Bird flu in humans hasn't officially been seen in U.S. in 3 months: "We just don't know why" - Health officials are making a renewed call for vigilance against bird flu, but some experts are puzzling over why reports of new human cases have stopped appearing.
Has the search for cases been weakened by government cuts? Are immigrant farm workers, who have accounted for many of the U.S. cases, more afraid to come forward for testing amid the Trump administration's deportation push? Is it just a natural ebb in infections?
"We just don't know why there haven't been cases," said Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Pandemic Center at Brown University. "I think we should assume there are infections that are occurring in farmworkers that just aren't being detected."
The H5N1 bird flu has been spreading widely among wild birds, poultry and other animals around the world for several years, and starting early last year became a problem in people and cows in the U.S. In the last 14 months, infections have been reported in 70 people in the U.S. — most of them workers on dairy and poultry farms, and mostly with mild symptoms. One person died in Louisiana.
While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the virus still poses a low risk to the general public, an infectious disease expert noted that every new infection increases the odds that bird flu could mutate and lead to more severe disease.
